Windows 10 now runs on 300 million active devices globally

Microsoft has disclosed that Windows 10 is now running on 300 million active devices worldwide.

Usuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Windows and Devices Group, said on Thursday that Windows 10 is now running on 300 million active devices globally after launching back in July 2015. The company is seeing a significant growth in the use of Windows 10 in schools, businesses, and homes, and is further promoting adoption of Microsoft Edge, Cortana, Groove Music, and similar services.

For instance, Mehdi said in a blog post that Windows 10 users spent more than 63 billion minutes in the built-in Microsoft Edge browser through March, a 50-percent growth in minutes during compared to the last quarter of 2015. However, the baked-in browser still faces stiff competition from Google Chrome, which dominated the browser market with a 69.9-percent share in March, followed by Mozilla’s Firefox with a 17.8-percent share in the same month.

In its January announcement, Microsoft noted more than three-quarters of its enterprise customers were running active pilots of Windows 10. Between enterprise and education customers, there were more than 22 million devices running the new OS. This number was not updated in Microsoft’s Thursday announcement.

Windows 10 marked a transformational change in Microsoft’s approach to building and distributing its operating system. When it announced changes like Windows-as-a-Service and the Universal Windows Platform in January 2015, the company also announced it would be offering Windows 10 as a free upgrade for one year following its July 2015 launch.

Redmond claims Windows 10 is growing more rapidly than any previous version of Windows. Its newest OS has already outpaced Windows 7 by nearly 140% and Windows 8 by nearly 400%.

With the milestone, Bryan Roper from the Windows team said that, “We’re seeing people at home, at schools, at small businesses, at large companies, and other organizations adopt Windows 10 faster than ever, and use Windows 10 more than ever before.

According to him, over 63 billion minutes were spent on Microsoft Edge in March alone, with 50% growth in minutes since the last quarter. Exclusively available on Windows 10,

People are playing games on Windows 10 more than ever before, with over 9 billion hours of gameplay on Windows 10 since launch, he said.

Roper said that apps that come with Windows 10, including Photos, Groove Music, and Movies & TV, he informed are seeing millions of active users each month, including more than 144 million people using Photos.
