University of Ibadan Shut Over Students Protest

Rival Youths Clash in Obosi, Leave Houses Burnt and Many Injured

The management of the University of Ibadan has closed the institution, following a two-day protest by students of the University over the  suspension of a union leader by the students’ disciplinary committee and non-availability of some amenities needed on the campus.
Academic, administrative and commercial activities in the school were paralysed as no vehicle was allowed in and out of the school. Traffic gridlock on UI Road was hell as motorists wanting to gain entrance into the institution could not do so as the all gates leading to the school were shut.
A circular issued by the management of the institution on Tuesday directed students to leave their halls of residence and proceed on a long vacation, while suspending academic activities till further notice.
A student, who simply identified herself as Sarah, told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday night that although the management directed that students should leave the school by 4pm, students had refused to vacate their halls.
